Geotechnical and Foundation Expert

The Geotechnical & Foundation Expert is a senior-level technical professional responsible for the independent verification, validation, and optimization of all geotechnical and geological components within a major railway infrastructure project. The role involves a critical assessment of soil investigations, subgrade characterization, and the structural design of foundations for various project elements, including bridges, culverts, and embankments. A primary objective of this position is to ensure that all ground-related designs are technically sound, safe, and cost-effective through the application of Value Engineering (VE) principles.

Location : Asia
Field : Geotechnical Engineering
Experience Level : 15+
Type of Contract : Permanent

Key Responsibilities

• Geotechnical Investigation Review: Assess all geotechnical and geological data collected during APD and Preliminary Design stages including borehole logs, SPT, CPT, trial pits, laboratory testing, subgrade bearing capacity tests, and soil/rock analyses

• DED Geotechnical Data Assessment: Assess all additional data carried out by DED-Consultant as part of their scope

• Foundation Design Verification: Verify data adequately supports foundation design, subgrade characterization, slope stability, and structural safety for bridges, culverts, embankments, and other key structures

• Borehole and Testing Compliance: Verify compliance with specified borehole spacing and depth as per DED Spec. Evaluate appropriateness and results of in-situ field tests. Scrutinize laboratory testing procedures and results for soil classification, strength, compaction, and chemical properties

• Ground Improvement Review: Review ground improvement methods (stabilization, blanketing, geogrids, drainage layers). Recommend optimized or alternative solutions where performance or cost efficiency can be improved

• Slope Stability Analysis: Check stability calculations, soil parameters, boundary conditions, and seismic assumptions. Confirm required safety factors are achieved for all slope conditions. Propose reinforcement/stabilization measures where necessary

• Foundation Type Selection: Validate soil investigations, geotechnical parameters, and foundation recommendations. Review foundation type selection (shallow, piles, caissons, rafts). Confirm adequacy under design loads and ground conditions

• Settlement and Liquefaction Assessment: Assess potential settlement, liquefaction, and stability risks. Verify bearing capacities and settlement assessments

• Gap Identification and Supplementary Work: Where additional geotechnical investigations are required for design optimization or rationalized solutions, identify and justify. If gaps/deficiencies identified, prepare detailed justification report and formally notify Client

• Value Engineering: Propose and evaluate alternative foundation types (shallow foundations vs. deep piles, ground improvement techniques like vibro-compaction). Conduct cost-benefit analysis of geotechnical solutions

• Embankment and Subgrade Works: Validate final formation levels against geotechnical constraints. Review embankment design, subgrade preparation, and soil stabilization measures

• Documentation: Provide updated geotechnical and geological data including logs, laboratory test results, and analytical reports for any supplementary investigations performed
